Law & Ethics of Cyber Space

Course Purpose
In today’s society, in which it has become commonplace to use the internet, we are facing an increasing number of legal problems centered on intellectual property rights. For anyone living in today’s information society, these kinds of problems cannot be avoided. The aim of this course is to deepen students’ understanding of internet-related legal problems focusing primarily on intellectual property rights.

Students will be able to understand the essence of internet-related legal problems and associated practical issues.

Session 1Understand the big picture of legal issues related to cyberspace.
Session 2Internet and trademark infringement (1): Understand the basics of trademark law as a prerequisite for learning about the Internet and trademark infringement.
Session 3Internet and trademark infringement (2): Understand issues such as domain names, meta tags, internationality of the Internet, and Internet shopping malls.
Session 4Internet and copyright law (1): Understand the basic matters of copyright law (significance of copyright law, copyrighted works, authors).
Session 5Internet and copyright law (2): Understand the basic matters of copyright law (requirements for copyright infringement, etc.).
Session 6Internet and copyright law (3): Understand Internet-related copyright issues (public transmission on websites, downloads from the Internet, etc.).
Session 7Internet and copyright law (4): Understand Internet-related copyright issues (portrait rights, publicity rights, etc.).
Session 8Internet and patent rights: Understand the issues of internet-related patents, including business model patents.
